Media Advisory (November 21, 2016)
Ottawa – On National Housing Day (Tuesday, November 22) – the same day as Minister Jean-Yves Duclos is expected to identify top priorities for the federal government’s National Housing Strategy – over 250 community partners will gather to ensure evidence is turned into action in our community’s effort to end homelessness.
This year’s Community Forum on Ending Homelessness in Ottawa (click here for Full Program) includes a special afternoon panel featuring Erin Dej, co-author of State of Homelessness in Canada 2016, with three leaders addressing homelessness among priority populations: Melanie Redman (A Way Home Canada) addressing youth homelessness, Marc Maracle (Gignul Non-Profit Housing), addressing homelessness among indigenous communities, and Mark Eldridge (Soldiers Helping Soldiers), addressing homelessness among veterans. Panellists will identify ways the emerging National Housing Strategy needs to respond.
A morning keynote features Marybeth Shinn (Vanderbilt University, Nashville) reporting on the Family Options Study – the most comprehensive study ever, funded by the US federal government, examining interventions to end family homelessness. With data showing family homelessness on the rise in Ottawa in 2015, Shinn will share findings related to costs, and to a series of outcomes related to housing stability, family and children’s well-being arising from different responses.
Another morning panel will explore the multiple components that make up ‘home,’ while a series of workshops and table discussions will profile emerging issues, including: homelessness among LGBTQ adults, planning tools and inclusionary zoning, peer support, rooming houses, and A Way Home Ottawa – our community’s initiative to end youth homelessness.
The day begins (at 8:45 am) with a municipal proclamation of National Housing Day in Ottawa by Deputy Mayor Mark Taylor, on behalf of Mayor Jim Watson.
